Yes it’s true; it’s been a long cold, snowy winter in Milton.
Lack of activity, sunshine (vitamin D), and social activity can take their toll. I know that hibernating with hot cocoa and warm cookies in the cold weather are tempting. And trust me we all deserve to indulge once in a while. But the cold weather doesn’t have to stop your family from staying active.
If you have a young family home for a week from school over March break, cabin fever can set in pretty quickly. So, how are you going to beat the winter blues and keep your family moving? Here are some of the activities the Health Centre of Milton team took part in this year to stay physically active and we encourage you to do the same.
First there are the typical winter activities like skating and snow shoeing. We are fortunate enough to live in an area where we can take a short drive and be surrounded by the peace and quiet of Mother Nature. Above is a picture of Dr. Dan and Dr. Sarah snowshoeing at the Scenic Caves in Collingwood. However you don’t have to go that far for a snowshoeing adventure. Locally you can take the family to Crawford Lake Conservation Park and rent snowshoes for the day and explore the trails they offer rated easy-moderate difficulty. If it’s too cold outside skating is a great option as there are plenty of indoor rinks here in Milton. The local rinks provide kids with walkers to assist with learning and have frequent public skate times.
But what do you do on the days when it really is just too cold to go out? Well, sometimes you have to get creative but we found that Skyzone in Mississauga did this for us. They have created an indoor trampoline park! They have a sea of trampolines and you can literally bounce off the walls as they have angled wall trampolines too! They also had different areas for kids and adults of all ages. There was a slam dunk basketball trampoline as well as a foam pit which you can fly into. Our practitioners engaged in a game of trampoline dodge ball and had an intense workout while having a blast!
