Pregnancy and Pediatrics
Our chiropractors and registered massage therapists recommend regular chiropractic care and pregnancy massage part of a woman’s pre-, peri-, and postnatal care. It helps keep mom feeling good and assist her in coping with the physical stresses of pregnancy that may often cause back pain.
Most women experience a number of neuromuscular and biomechanical changes in their body. These include: The release of a hormone called relaxin that causes muscle and ligament relaxation, increased weight gain, and change in weight distribution.
The above change primarily affect the pelvic and spinal ligaments, muscles, joints and other supportive soft tissues. These changes cause sprain/strains of pelvic and spinal structures, as well as alteration of the normal spinal curvatures. and pelvic biomechanics. The result is an increased stress on the body leading to pain and discomfort.
Furthermore, it is these tense muscles and ligaments and their constraining effect on the uterus which prevents the body from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth. The Webster Technique, which both Dr. Dan and Dr. Sarah are certified in, is defined as a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nervous system and facilitates biomechanical balance in pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments. This has been shown to reduce the effects of intrauterin constrain, allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.
In expectant mothers presenting breech, there has been a high reported success rate of the baby turning to the normal vertex position. However this technique should not be interpreted as an obstetric “breach turning” technique.
Referral for pregnancy massage by our registered massage therapists or acupuncture by our Naturopathic Doctor may be made in your program of care.
Pediatric chiropractic care is a growing field. More and more parents are realizing the importance of giving their children the same attention that adults get when it comes to the care of their spine.
Many stresses on our spine and the sensitive structures housed within begin right from birth. Joints that are designed to move easily may become tight and lack mobility. In a child this spinal stress can manifest itself as irritability, a depressed immune system, excessive crying, headache, local discomfort and chronic infections to name a few. However; spinal stress can often go unnoticed until the child is an adolescent or adult at which time obvious pain and stiffness creeps in.
Chiropractic care of the pediatric patient is unlike that of the adult. Because the delicate spinal structures in a child differs from that of the adult, “adjustments” to the spine are more gentle and non forceful.
Through their experience and extra education, our chiropractors, Dr. Dan, Dr. Sarah, and Dr. Becky have a great deal of knowledge with pediatrics. They use gentle safe techniques to treat your child if they should require treatment.
